About Kelly

How would your closest friends describe you?
Gee that’s difficult! They’d probably say I’m energetic and very positive. I’d hope they’d also say I was a good friend, supportive, non judgemental, encouraging and accepting.

What has been one of your most defining moments in life?
I have a too many – growing up in a big family, meeting my wife, raising our children, becoming a Christian and discovering the Coast to Coast race. These have all had a big impact on who I am today.

Where are we most likely to find you on a Sunday afternoon?
Up in the port hills with my wife Melissa walking or jogging. We love the outdoors.

What is a skill you’d like to learn and why?
I’d like to learn to ride a unicycle because it looks like great fun.

If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be?
I try not to get too attached to any of my stuff, but I really like my kayak, bikes and running shoes and my car. These are the things that take me cool places

Why did you become a Community Board member, and what do you hope you can bring to the table?
I became a community board member because I grew frustrated at the slow pace of improvement on our side of town and I want to see us all move forward now, not in 10 years.

I want to see people happy about where they live and to feel good about themselves and their community.

Our side of town has so many of the cool places that make Christchurch a fantastic place to live – the river, the beach, the wetlands, the forest, the parks, the golf courses, the Pier, the Hot Pools etc and we have the best suburban pool (QE11) in the whole city.

I want to see the council to make the most of the resources they commit to our area but also to motivate our people to pick up the slack and take care of their own environment.

I’m an eternal optimist and I’m reasonably good at bringing people together and seeing the best in them. I see no use looking back except to learn how to go forward making less mistakes.

With any luck this will be useful in the days ahead.
